Willits: Gateway to the Redwoods

The terminus of Fort Bragg’s Skunk Train, Willits is a small town on HWY101 right before the Avenue of Giants. Originally called Little Lake, this former lumber town is also known for being the former home of the racing horse Seabiscuit, the site of a hexavalent chromium lawsuit filed by Erin Brockovich, and a bloody vandetta related to the Civil War between the Frost and Coates families that culminated in a bloody shootout and later a triple hanging.

This sign, donated by the City of Reno, advertises Willits as the "Gateway to the Redwoods" from the South and "Heart of Mendocino County" from the North.
