Seventeen former and current flight crew are planning to sue British airlines for contaminated cabin air, the BBC reports. Workers believe they all fell ill after breathing in fumes that was mixed with engine oil and other toxic chemicals in the air circulating through aircraft. The cases are funded by the Unite union, which represents 20,000 flight staff.

However, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says incidents of smoke or fumes on planes are rare and there is no evidence of there being a high enough concentration of contaminants to cause health problems or even long-term health effects. The Unite union is calling for a public inquiry into contaminated cabin air, according to the BBC. The union has even opened a dedicated legal unit to record and process claims from its membership.

The BBC reports that around around half the air on board most modern commercial jets is pumped into the aircraft through the engines. Those who claim cabin air toxic say when there is a problem with the engine seals, a mix of potentially poisonous gases can reach the cabin. Among these toxic gasses includes TCP, an organophosphate known to be dangerous to human health if there are high enough quantities in the air.

Some cabin crew believe it is exposure to such toxins that over a long period of time that has damaged their long-term health. The problems also reportedly affect the central nervous system and brain. However, the CAA insists there is no evidence to support the claim that there are chemicals at high enough concentrations to cause bodily harm.

Meanwhile, in 2013, an independent group of scientists — the Committee on Toxicity — could not establish a link between contaminated cabin air and ill health. Instead, the committee reported that an explanation for crew falling ill could be the “nocebo” effect, which is a psychological condition where exposure to even a harmless substance can lead to nausea, fatigue and other medical symptoms.

Ondansetron, a powerful anti-nausea drug, is currently manufactured by multinational pharmaceutical conglomerate GlaxoSmithKline. Marketed under the brand name Zofran, this drug has been approved by the US Food & Drug Administration since 1991 for the treatment of severe nausea and vomiting. But the FDA has limited Zofran’s indication strictly to patients receiving cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and irradiation, as well as those undergoing surgical anesthesia.

But the 90s also saw Zofran become America’s bestselling treatment for morning sickness, the nausea and vomiting that normally arise during the first trimester of pregnancy. The drug’s success came despite the fact that Zofran’s effects on pregnant women and fetal development have never been studied. The FDA has not approved Zofran for use during pregnancy, and GlaxoSmithKline has presented no evidence of the medication’s safety for unborn children.

In 2012, the US Department of Justice brought multiple civil and criminal charges against GlaxoSmithKline, including an allegation that the company had fraudulently marketed Zofran directly to obstetricians and gynecologists as a “safe” treatment for morning sickness. While GlaxoSmithKline continues to deny all claims of illegal activity, the company settled its case with the Department of Justice for billion. It remains the largest single settlement for allegations of health care fraud in US history.

Now, several large epidemiological studies have begun to establish an association between Zofran and severe birth defects, including cleft palate and congenital heart defects. In recent months, two women have already filed lawsuits, claiming that their children’s birth defects are the result of Zofran taken during the first trimester. The women allege that GlaxoSmithKline was well aware of Zofran’s potential dangers, but did nothing to warn the public. If these damning allegations prove true, women who took Zofran and then delivered babies with birth defects may be entitled to substantial compensation.

Led by Michael Monheit, managing partner of Monheit Law, a coalition of distinguished plaintiffs’ attorneys has begun investigating claims of birth defects that may have been caused by Zofran. Women who were prescribed Zofran, or generic ondansetron, and gave birth to children with congenital defects can learn more by calling (877) 620 – 8411 or visiting zofranlegal.com.

Crystals City Center

A few nice just filed images I found:

Crystals City Center

I’m a pretty big fan of almost everything at City Center. I really like the hotels, Aria and Cosmo are two of my favorite places in Vegas, I just wish they had a little more affordable gambling and hotel rates. I’m dying to stay in one of those Cosmo rooms with a balcony overlooking the Bellagio fountains. The problem is the rates start at 0-0 on the weekend. The Crystals mall is really nice too, with some really unique designs, but you won’t find me doing much shopping there, the stores are the same as what’s on Rodeo Dr.

This is a mix of photomatix details enhancer, 32-bit hdr and source files. I didn’t bring my tripod with me, so I raised the ISO a bit and steadied the camera on top of a narrow glass wall.
